As The Patience Band has added to it’s repertoire, every now and then we come across a song or an artist that also could sound great without drums or electric guitars. Bruce Springsteen (Ghost of Tom Joad; The River), Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here), Allman Brothers (Melissa), The Band (The Weight)… Just a few examples.
And – occasionally we find new songwriters that grab our attention with great acoustic licks and awesome lyrics: Jason Isbell, Conor Oberst, Zac Brown Band….
And then we remember our roots – folk and acoustic folk songs, with great harmonies and acoustic patterns. Singer/songwriters from our early musical days like Ian and Sylvia, Paul Simon, Steve Goodman, John Denver, James Taylor, John Prine, Harry Chapin…
From this amalgam of influences both old and new comes the latest addition: The Patience Acoustic.
John, Tom and Brian have branched out to produce a more mellow version of the band, aimed at smaller, more intimate venues. In The Patience Acoustic, John goes back to his acoustic guitar and Brian trades in his electric bass for a great Martin acoustic bass. Tom provides the lead vocals and John is doing many more harmonies than he is able to do with the full band.
We continue to look for chances to repurpose and create acoustic arrangements for songs originally written for rock, discovering new ways to give older songs a new treatment, and discovering new acoustic tunes. We are having a lot of fun working in this new (old!) Patience Band project. And we are looking forward to sharing it with new (and old!) audiences.
